They say that the older you get, the faster time goes. I could not agree more! I can't believe Thanksgiving is tomorrow! Where did this year go?
I find myself feeling very blessed and thankful for so many things!
First, I am thankful for my amazing family. I was blessed to grow up in a Christian home with parents who instilled morals in me that make me the person I am today. I thank God daily to have the parents that I do.
I am thankful for my husband, who loves me for who I am! He truly is the best husband in the world and as sappy as that sounds, I would not be who I am without him. He is my best friend and the love of my life! And I'm thankful for our little family of 4 with our two doggies. They bring me so much joy and I love the family we have.
I am thankful for my wonderful friends. I truly have the best friends. And I am so thankful that I was able to attend many of their weddings this year. It is so amazing watching them say their vows to the loves of their lives. I can't wait for the many more weddings to come and to watch all my beautiful friends form families. Such a blessing!
Lastly, I am thankful for the passion that God gave me to write and the passion he gave me for weddings. I don't know where it will lead me, but I know that God gives each of us gifts. I plan to follow what HIS will is for my life, knowing it will never steer me wrong.
I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and remember all that you are thankful for as well!
Love,
Kristin

How to Change Your Last Name
Congratulations! You are married and most likely have taken the last name of your now, husband. As you open gifts from your wedding and receive congratulations you are probably being called by your now married last name. However fun that is, it comes with the question -how do I change my last name legally?
There is a process so I thought I would dedicate a blog to it.
Here are the "to do's":
1. Get your marriage license
You will need to get a copy of the original certificate that you, your husband, witnesses and officient signed. You should probably get this in the mail but if not call the office where you filed to get copies. You may ask for more than one because you might need to send a few in to different places.
2. Social Security Card
You will need to change the last name on this right away. I would google the social security administration website and fill out the application. Your number will stay the same. Either you can mail in the application with a copy of your marriage certificate or you can go to a local office and provide your certificate and most likely your ID.
3. Driver's License
Go to your local DMV and show them your marriage certificate and current ID to get a new one. This most likely will be a small charge and will come in the mail.
4. Passport (if applicable)
You can obtain a complete passport amendment/validation application at your local DMV. You will have to fill this out and send it in with your current passport, and a marriage certificate. Unfortunately they will charge you a fee to do this. If you plan on traveling out of the country any time soon I would make this a priority because it can take a while.
4. Bank Accounts
Call your local bank and see what they need. Some may ask you to again bring in a copy of your marriage certificate and ID. They will update all your information then.
Once you have your new driver's license and social security card the rest should be easy.. Here is a list of some places to change your name:
Good Luck!

Real Life Wedding: My Best Friend's Married!
Well the day came and went and I find myself depressed it's over! My best friend in the world was married last Saturday. Let me tell you what a beautiful wedding it was!!!
Kara and Ryan were married at St. Joseph's church in New Hope and the reception took place at Bearpath Golf & Country Club in Eden Prairie. The scenery was breathtaking. The venue overlooked a pond with tons of beautiful trees and vibrant colors. They were blessed with still so many fall colors for the end of October!
Ryan (the groom) loves to fish! So they took his hobby to another level and incorporated some very unique ideas to their wedding. The place cards were inserted in to bobbers for each guest to take to their tables. The table's were assigned by fish name instead of numbers. They also incorporated pictures of themselves at each table which incorporated some sort of fish. What a unique idea!!!
I will say that this is the first time I have been to Bearpath Golf & Country Club and it is amazing. If you are looking for a beautiful venue, please consider this!!! The grounds are beautiful and the room is very elegant!
Kara and Ryan, I love you both so much and am so honored to have been your MOH and to have shared in your beautiful day!
Here are some pics of their wedding day. Leah Fontaine did the photography and did an outstanding job! Our good friend, Meghan also took some pics for Kara and they turned out fantastic!

Here's a tip!
In the last few months I have gotten the same question a number of times... who do I tip and what is expected?
This is a great question! Tipping vendors for their services can be difficult especially when you probably feel that are you spending a lot of money already. But, each vendor is different and what is expected is really up to you.
Below is a guideline to tipping just to help you out. Remember, the amount you give is honestly up to you and your budget and the below is based on some research and my opinion. As a rule of thumb, all tips should be given in cash and in a separate envelope. That way, it is clear that this is a separate "thank you" dollar amount for that vendor alone. Tips should also be given before the vendor leaves so you can manage what you gave and acknowledge the job they did for you. Another idea is to put the cash in a "thank you" card and to include a nice note. You can never go wrong showing more appreciation!
The ones you should tip:
Limousine/Bus Drivers: 10% - 15% is usually acceptable. $150 max for this is more than acceptable so in case your bill is larger, don't feel that you should exceed this amount.
Wait Staff: Usually the tip is already included in your contract. Be sure to check this. If so, no tip is required. If it is not included, 15% is acceptable but in my opinion, not necessary.
Bartender: Same rule applies as the wait staff. Usually there is a jar for extra tips for your guests to contribute if they feel led. If it is not included in your contract, 10% is more than enough.
Hair stylist/Makeup artists: Yes! For sure tip these people. They usually work on base + commission and if you are a bride, you know this is one of the most important vendors for your day! :) 15% would be a nice tip and more if you feel they did an exceptional job.
DJ/Band: I would tip them between $50 - $100.
Optional tipping:
Banquet Hall or Catering Manager: This is optional based on how great of a job they did and how involved they have been. I would suggest between $50 - $100.
Photographer & Videographer: If these vendors own their company then I would say tipping is optional. However, if you have a great photographer, a gift of money is always nice.
Officiant: Generally you just pay a fee and that's it. However, for my wedding we were very close to our Pastor and he mentored us for a year before our wedding so we tipped him as a thank you. But again, this depends on your experience.
Florist: I would tip them an extra $5 per delivery location. No more than $50.
Cake Designer/Baker: I would say this is totally optional. A lot of venues include the cake as a part of your F&B (food and beverage) minimum. If that's the case, I would say don't feel you need to tip.
I hope this gives you some good guidelines on tipping etiquette! Again, this is also based on your preference. Good luck!
Love,
Kristin

Real Life Wedding: Outdoor Ceremony and a Funky Reception!
I had the honor to be a bridesmaid in my friend Meghan's wedding a couple of weeks ago. It was a chilly day but we made up for it with some warm shawls and lots of hugs!
I wanted to share how unique this wedding was! The ceremony was held at the Lake Harriett Bandshell. I know I recently blogged about outdoor ceremony sites and this was not in my list. I had never seen a wedding done at this location before and let me tell you how happy I was to see it in person with the bonus of being in the wedding. This location is so beautiful! The stage overlooked Lake Harriett which allowed for minimal decorating needs. The view of the lake and trees is really all you need. Plus, the structure of the pavillion is beautiful enough. There are also benches already in place so there is no need to rent chairs for your guests to be seated. Those are two huge cost savings alone! And you really can't beat the view!!! Here is a shot of the ceremony:
The reception was held at The Varsity Theater located in Minneapolis. Again, a first for me! This venue is SO unique!!! What a creative idea to hold a reception at the theater!!!! The lighting and decor was very funky and fun. Here is a shot of the sign outside the theater. Talk about making an impression before even walking in the door!
The Varsity Theater has a great big stage as well where the head table is seated. The whole venue is two floors with a nice quiet area upstairs to just relax if you need a moment to yourself. The food was also delicious! Probably one of the best meals I've had at a wedding. Loring Pasta Bar caters at this venue and you will not be disappointed.
Overall, this wedding was so unique and beautiful! I'm so glad I had the opportunity to be a part of Meghan's special day!!!

Kristin

Real Life Wedding: Northern Minnesota
One of my favorite things about Minnesota is the summer and going up north to the cabin!
This last weekend my husband and I attended a wedding of our good friend's, Mike and Molly. I have known the groom since I was 11 years old and his wife is one of the sweetest people I have met. We were truly honored to share their day and boy, was it beautiful!!
The wedding was hosted at the Clamshell Beach Resort in Pequot Lakes. This resort was so quaint and beautiful, situated right on the water. The entire resort was designated to attendees of the wedding. What a great idea to have a relaxing weekend with your closest family and friends!!
Here is a shot of the view we had from our cabin. Gorgeous!
Weddings in Northern Minnesota are becoming more and more popular! I wanted to provide a list of the resorts I recommend for weddings if you are looking for a "destination" wedding without having to travel so far away (for you Minnesotan's...).
1. Clamshell Beach Resort - noted above.
2. Grand View Lodge - I recently threw my best friend's bachelorette party here. It is a beautiful setting and very nice resort with a wonderful sales staff!
3. Craguns Resort & Hotel on Gull Lake - Great location and not far from all the action of Pequot Lakes area.
4. Maddens on Gull Lake - this is where I had my bachelorette party. They have a phenomonal golf course and it is a spread out resort with a great restaurant, great views and wonderful amenities.
These are just a few of the resorts to consider when shopping around for a venue.
One thing I will note is that you might need to provide your own caterer for some of these locations. Molly and Mike (the recent bride & groom) had a caterer come in and provide all the food & alcohol. They did a great job and the food was excellent.
You also may need to shop around for a vendor to provide the tent and chairs for your ceremony and reception. Again, it depends where you get married and the type of wedding you want. These are just a few things to keep in mind.
I will leave you with some pictures from the weekend. I am obsessed with the centerpieces!!! I love the use of the mason jars and the different flowers. What a great idea to include the "up North" feel. Each table was named as a lake in Northern Minnesota. Such a cute, unique touch! Mike and Molly also used real wood as coasters which is a great favor! Overall, it was a perfect wedding celebrating a great couple!

Free Printable Wedding Invitation
Yes, you saw that right - FREE invitation!
I visit The Wedding Shoppe's page quite a bit to get ideas on dresses, styles and fashion. Well, today they posted a link to download a free wedding invitation. You are able to print it yourself.
Here is the link:
http://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/blog/index.php/2012/08/30/free-printable-wedding-invitations-ip-lml
I thought I would share because who doesn't like free things?!
I am off to the Minnesota State Fair with a fun check list for me and the hubby and some of our friends to do. Think mullets, fanny packs, etc. Don't worry, I don't think I'll be posting any wedding tips from the fair :)
Happy Labor Day!

Booking your Venue: Outdoor Ceremony Spaces
Picking your venue is one of the best parts in the planning process! But it can also be very overwhelming. There are SO many options. But now that you have your time of year and an idea of how you envision your wedding, you should be able to narrow down your venue choices. This blog is going to focus on the Spring/Summer brides who are looking for an outdoor ceremony site.
I thought I would help you out and put together a list of my favorite venues! Click on each of the links to be connected to the website of each venue.
Most of these venues have ballrooms/reception areas at the same location which will save your guests the transfer time to/from the ceremony and reception.
1. Plymouth Creek Center - The Millennium Gardens. This is where I had my wedding so of course I had to include it! It really is a beautiful and affordable site! Because this venue is in the middle of a garden, you do not need to do any decorating! The flowers and surrounding gardens lend all the decor you need!

2. Olympic Hills Golf Club - Eden Prairie.
One of my best friends was married here in 2010 and it is absolutely gorgeous! There is a beautiful arch overlooking a pond with willow trees. So gorgeous!
3. Withrow Ballroom - Hugo. See my last blog post for some great pics. Again, one of my dearest friends was married there last weekend. I honestly had not heard about this venue before but it is really beautiful and VERY reasonably priced! If you are looking for a "country" feel, this is the place to be!
4. Carlson Rotunda /Amphitheater- Minnetonka. I attended a wedding at this venue last winter. Although they did not use the outdoor amphitheter, this is a beautiful spot.

5. Nicollet Island Pavilion - Minneapolis. This is a beautiful space! It is covered which is nice if it rains but still has the outdoor feel. One of my best friend's, Amy is getting married here next May. I can't wait to blog about it! :)
6. The Woods Chapel - Orono. This is the cutest space! I love the rustic feel and how private it is. There is also a chapel onsite in case of rain, which is a huge plus! There is also a quaint bridal cottage for the bride and her maids to get ready. Great for pictures!

If you are planning for an outdoor ceremony space, I highly recommend any of the above spaces. These of course are only a few. There are many more possibilites. I would suggest going to The Knot to research some spaces that might be of interest to you!
I will leave you with one piece of advice... if you decided on an outdoor ceremony site, be prepared for rain. I know, it's the dreaded word no bride wants to hear or even think about! But, the one thing we can not control is the weather. If it rains, you just need to make the best of it! After all, there are pretty cute umbrella pictures! :) Remember, it is about the marriage and the love between you and your fiancee. Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but about dancing in the rain!

Kristin

Real Life Wedding: Do It Yourself!
I had the honor of being a personal attendant in one of my dearest friend's wedding last weekend. It was the perfect day! The sun was shining and the venue could not be more beautiful! My friend, Kim was married at Withrow Ballroom on Friday, August 24th. The venue is surrounded by farms, horses and includes an outdoor pagoda to make a beautiful ceremony site.
I have been to my fair share of weddings and this is the first time that I have seen so much work go in to a wedding! Kim and her amazing mom put together the perfect example of a "do it yourself" wedding. Basically everything was hand made! Kim created a beautiful "country" themed wedding complete with chalk boards, burlap and shutters used as a name card holder. Kim was able to cut costs by creating their invitations, wedding programs, decorations, center pieces and even her head piece herself. I was beyond impressed!!!
Here is a picture of the beautiful wedding invitation and program she made. Kim runs her own business, KAD Designs. She is reasonably priced and will create a perfect invitation/program, etc. for you if you are looking for a wonderful vendor!
Another one of my dear friends, Meghan runs her own photography business and was able to capture some of these great shots resembling what a perfect do it yourself wedding consists of!
As you can see, each wedding can be so unique just by thinking outside the box!!!
Love, Kristin

Fall Back, Spring Ahead or somewhere in between!
Deciding on the time of year and date for your wedding is the next step on your "to do's" to start the planning process.
As mentioned in my previous blog post, the time of year can make a huge difference in the amount of money your wedding will cost you.
Most of the venues will jack up the price of the rental space and your food and beverage minimums based on the time of year. Most brides assume that spring/summer is the most popular time to get married but fall has become the most popular in recent years.
No matter the season you decide on, the end goal is to make your wedding your own! You can cross over seasons and go in to later months to save costs as well. For instance, if you want a fall wedding why not wait until early or even late November? You can still use the fall colors you love and decorate in a way to make it the theme you are looking for. Likewise, if you want a summer wedding why not book a venue in early Spring? These are just some ideas to save costs.
Below are some pictures I love that represent some different wedding "themes" for all seasons!
